Pharmacy First
Did you know that you can visit your local pharmacy for certain routine conditions, you can even be prescribed medication if clinically appropriate.
Consultations for these seven conditions can be provided to patients presenting to the pharmacy as well as those referred by NHS 111, general practices and others. So you do not need to be referred by a Doctor.
What does the service involve?
The Advanced service involves pharmacists providing advice and NHS-funded treatment, where clinically appropriate, for seven common conditions:
- sinusitis
- sore throat
- acute otitis media
- infected insect bite
- impetigo
- shingles
- contraception
- uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women.

Urgent appointments
To request an urgent appointment for today or tomorrow (Monday to Friday):
- phone us on 0115 8965 001, Monday to Friday from 8am to 6.30pm
- visit the surgery and speak with a receptionist, Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm
When you get in touch, we’ll ask what you need help with.
We will use the information you give us to choose the most suitable doctor, nurse or health professional to help you.
Routine appointments
To request a routine appointment within 48hours:

For non-urgent appointment requests and routine administrative enquiries please use our Online Triage Service ‘AccuRx
As all enquiries will be viewed and actioned within 48 hours there will be a limited number of enquiries available between 8am – 2pm Monday – Thursday.

- There are a limited range of appointments available through the NHS website or NHS App, including vaccinations and routine GP appointments

Your appointment
However you choose to contact us, we may offer you a consultation:
- By phone
- Face to face at the surgery
Appointments by phone can be more flexible and often means you get help sooner.
Cancelling or changing an appointment
To cancel your appointment:
- Use your NHS account (through the NHS website or NHS App)
- Phone us on 0115 8965 001, Monday to Friday from 8am to 6.30pm
- Reply CANCEL to your appointment reminder text message
Nurse Appointments
Our nurses offer a wide range of healthcare services, for the following:
- Contraception
- Dressings
- Diabetes
- Asthma
- Ear Syringing
- Removal of Stitches
- Blood Pressure Checks
- Cervical Smears
- Smoking Advice
- Immunisations and much more
Advanced Nurse Practitioners
Our Advanced Nurse Practitioners are qualified to prescribe when required, and they can help with ailments such as:
- Sore Throat
- Coughs
- Cold
- Chest Infection
- Urinary Tract Infection
- Fever, Abdominal pain
- Diarrhoea
- Skin disorders
- Minor Injuries
- Earache
- Bites/stings
If you need help when we are closed
If you need medical help now, use NHS 111 online or call 111.
NHS 111 online is for people aged 5 and over. Call 111 if you need help for a child under 5.
Call 999 in a medical or mental health emergency. This is when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk.
If you need help with your appointment
Please tell us:
- if there’s a specific doctor, nurse or other health professional you would prefer to respond
- if you would prefer to consult with the doctor or nurse by phone, face-to-face, by video call or by text or email
- if you need an interpreter
- if you have any other access or communication needs
Home visits
If you require an appointment and are housebound, we may be able to offer a home visit. Where possible, please telephone before 10.30am (except in an emergency) so that the doctors can plan their visits.
Home visits usually take place between 12:00 and 15:00.
